THE MOST DISCUSSED CBD BENEFITS
Cannabidiol (CBD) has recently seen massive growth and media attention due to its potential benefits, ranging from pain relief to anxiety and more. Why are the effects of CBD suddenly so talked about? CBD is the second most available ingredient in cannabis. While CBD is a component of marijuana, CBD itself does not cause a high, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
According to the World Health Organization, “CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems with the use of pure CBD.” This is great news for people using high quality CBD isolate. This quality makes CBD appealing for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of marijuana or certain prescription drugs.
The evidence for CBD benefits
It is said that CBD has many benefits, with the most recent scientific evidence for its effectiveness in treating childhood epilepsy. Studies showed CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and in some cases, it was able to stop them altogether. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these conditions, Epidiolex.
CBD is also used for anxiety and for patients who suffer from insomnia. Studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep. A study from the European Journal of Pain showed when CBD was applied on the skin, it could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis. Another study demonstrated how CBD reduces and/or inhibits inflammation and pain. CBD is quickly becoming a very useful tool in combating all sorts of ailments.
The human body contains a specialized system called the “endocannabinoid system,” which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain, and immune system response. For example, one study in rats found that CBD reduced pain response to surgery, while another rat study found that CBD treatment greatly reduced nerve pain and inflammation.
Multi Sclerosis and Arthritis
Several human studies have found that a combination of CBD and THC is effective in treating pain related to multiple sclerosis (MS) and arthritis. An oral spray called Sativex, which is a combination of THC and CBD, is approved in several countries to treat pain related to multiple sclerosis. One study of 47 people with multiple sclerosis examined the effects of taking Sativex for one month. The participants experienced improvements in pain, walking, and muscle spasms.
Depression and Anxiety
Anxiety and depression can have devastating impacts on well-being. According to the World Health Organization, depression is the single largest contributor to disability worldwide, while anxiety disorders are ranked sixth. Pharmaceutical drugs are usually the treatment options for anxiety and depression, which have numerous side effects, including drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and headaches. Some of these medications can be addictive and may lead to substance abuse. CBD oil has shown potential as a treatment for both depression and anxiety. In one study, 24 people with social anxiety disorder received either 600 mg of CBD or a placebo before a public speaking test. The group that received the CBD had significantly less anxiety, cognitive impairment, and discomfort in their speech performance, compared to the placebo group.
CBD oil has even been used to safely treat insomnia and anxiety due to insomnia.
Other Potential Benefits
CBD has been studied for its role in treating a number of health issues other than those outlined above. Though more studies are needed, CBD is thought to provide the following health benefits:
Psychosis: Studies suggest that CBD may help people by reducing psychotic symptoms.
Substance abuse treatment: CBD has been shown to modify circuits in the brain related to drug addiction. In rats, CBD has been shown to reduce morphine dependence and heroin-seeking behavior.
Tumors: In test-tube and animal studies, CBD has demonstrated anti-tumor effects. In animals, it has been shown to prevent the spread of breast, prostate, brain, colon, and lung cancer.
Diabetes: In diabetic mice, treatment with CBD reduced the incidence of diabetes by 56% and significantly reduced inflammation.
Some studies suggest that CBD may help with diabetes, substance abuse, mental disorders, and certain types of cancers. However, more research in humans is needed.
